Listening Project: Storyboarding

For our live brief, my group are working on an animation for the BBC Listening Project. After creating a collective script for this, a few of us storyboarded our ideas. Here are the storyboard panels that I worked on:

Post Production VFX - Sky Replacement Planning

For my Invisible Effect VFX shot, I wanted to have someone walking along the beach with a sky replacement so that it looked like there was a sunset. Here is a rough mock-up and mood-board for this shot.

Post Production VFX - Scale Shot Planning

For my second VFX shot, I wanted to film someone in front of a green-screen, make them appear miniature, and have them exploring in some bamboo with someone human-sized walking past. Here is my mock-up and moodboard for this shot:

Post Production VFX - Colour Shot Planning

For my first Visual Effects Shot for our Post Production Module, I wanted to film a girl walking into a 'secret garden', having the shot in black and white before she goes in and in colour when inside the garden. Here is a mock-up shot and moodboard for this shot, giving a vague idea of what I wanted it to look like.

11 Second Club Animation

Here is my final animation for the 11 Second Club Project which I achieved on Adobe Flash, also using Photoshop. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, although I could have perhaps added more overall movement. The lip syncing was the most difficult part and it may be slightly out of time but I think this was generally successful.

11 Second Club Background Test

For this project, I've created a background and tested colours which are quite bright to see what this would look like when animated. I think I will keep it looking like this because I quite like the bright colours.

11 Second Club

I'm currently working on a project for September's 11 Second Club challenge. Although the deadline has passed for this, we are completing it for one of our modules at uni. So far, I have created a storyboard and an animatic to go with the 11 seconds of sound given to us.

Cut Out Animation

Over Summer I experimented with card and created a short cut-out animation. Although the lighting isn't ideal (because I used natural sunlight), it looks okay. If I were to re-do it, I'd make the waves move in the beginning section as I've realised that they are stationary here.

Using Soft Pastels

Here I experimented with soft pastels for the first time. These were based on my favourite scenes in the Disney films: Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, and Tangled. They were inspired by some of Alice X Zhang's art and I would like to have a go at using watercolours with the same paintings as inspiration later.

Alice X. Zhang

Recently I discovered artist, Alice X. Zhang and I absolutely love her artwork. My personal favourites are these Disney paintings which had earlier inspired me to try out using soft pastels to recreate my favourite Disney scenes. Having looked at her website though, there are also many other paintings of hers that I also really like. I love the colours used and the emotion in them.

These Disney paintings are GORGEOUS! If I ever have a daughter, these are going in her room.

Disney Artists

My favourite pieces of art are Disney paintings by the Thomas Kinkade Company. I think that his artwork is beautiful and captivating. I also like the way that an entire Disney film has been summarised in one painting and I appreciate the hidden Disney characters. Although I love all of Kinkade's work, this is my personal favourite:

Sound Project

This is my finished sound project video. For this project, we had to strip an animation of its audio files and create our own dialogue, sound effects, ambience and music. I recorded all the sounds myself either in a recording studio or with the use of a H4n Zoom recorder except for the music and two of the sound effects (scream/gasp and the child laugh) which I accessed online.

Title Sequence Project

This is our final Title Sequence animation for this project. I worked on this with four other people and my input on this animation was to find research, come up with the idea for the ending with the title, colour backgrounds, create silhouettes and to the create the truck.

Watercolour Background

I created this background for our background layout project using watercolour pencils. This was my first time using these and so I'm quite pleased with how it looks. My only issue with it is that the pencil lines are obvious, even after using water, so perhaps I should have used a little more water and less pencil.

Digital Painting

This is a background layout with a key light source and secondary light for our background project that I digitally painted using a graphics tablet on Photoshop. I am happy with how this turned out as I hadn't digitally painted before this. There may however, be some issues with perspective.

Trees

This is a chalk drawing that I did of trees in atmospheric perspective using pastels.

Motion Studies Showreel

Here is a showreel that I put together with all the tasks that I completed for our motion studies module including the 2D walk cycles (walk and skip), stop motion wall climb and lip sync, and the final stop motion dance project.

Dance Project

Here is my dance animation. I'm happy with the twirl and leg kick but with some of the animation, it's difficult to see what's going on and it was a little less successful. As it was the first time that I had made puppets and animated them however, I am happy with it. The puppet making itself took a while and there were some difficulties with wire being the wrong length and arms falling off whilst animating. I am happy with how they turned out though.

Background Layouts

These are two background layouts I created based on the storyboard for 'Ranger Rick's Adventures: Boomer's Grumpy Day' which I looked at earlier on in the year.

Title Sequence Interior Backgrounds

For our Title Sequence group project, I have coloured some interior backgrounds that were given to me as line art. This was quite time consuming and the colours needed to be agreed on by the rest of the group so there were a few times where I needed to change them based on what was said. I'm really happy with the final coloured backgrounds.

Naturalistic Paintings

These I painted, copying the work of two naturalistic artists. The first one was based on a painting by the artist William Bradford and the second was based on a painting by the artist Franz Richard Unterberger.

Sketching Disney Backgrounds

These are some sketches that I did, copying backgrounds from Disney films. The first is from Beauty and the Beast, the second from Princess and The Frog and the third from the Lion King.

Parallax

This is a parallax which I created on Adobe After Effects. Although the painting could be better, I think that the speed and colour contrast is good.

Designs for Title Sequence Project

This is a truck/van that I designed to fit the style of our Title Sequence animation. This will be used in a scene where the main character George will jump onto the back whilst running away from the age police.

These are some silhouettes that I designed to go in the background of our animation. They will be moving along a conveyor belt.

These are some silhouette puppets that I created on Photoshop that will later be animated by another group member to fall in the background of our animation.
